National Landscape Award 2023, special mention for the Santa Barbara Mining Path

This morning, in Rome, in the Spadolini Room of the Ministry of Culture, the National Landscape Award was assigned, a biennial event now in its fourth edition, during which awards are given to projects that have distinguished themselves in enhancing the territory, for means of safeguarding, management or planning actions, in line with the 4 criteria of exemplarity, development, participation and awareness indicated by the European Union.

The Santa Barbara Mining Trail, with the project “At a slow pace to discover mining paths and villages: the Santa Barbara Mining Trail for the ethical and sustainable development of the landscape”, obtained the special mention “For the recovery and enhancement cultural and naturalistic itineraries based on the paths of the now abandoned mining activities, implemented by structuring and promoting an alternative and ethical tourist offer around the network of paths capable of suggesting forms of immersion in the landscape that favor slow mobility. For the exemplary nature of the project that can be re-proposed in other areas of the Region as part of an action to combat depopulation and environmental degradation resulting from the abandonment of mining activities. For the alternative perspective to the monoculture of mass seaside tourism concentrated in the coastal strips, oriented towards the promotion of slow, experiential and sustainable tourism, directed to the most marginal areas of the hinterland”.

“An important acknowledgment that pushes us to continue on the path undertaken for the enhancement of our territory and all its environmental, historical and landscape heritage, both material and immaterial”, highlights the President Mauro Usai.
“I want to thank all the staff of the Foundation, who work every day to create a cultural infrastructure that allows us to cultivate our identity with a view to tourism and sustainable development.
We dedicate the special mention we received to the memory of Giampiero Pinna, to his passion and his commitment to the Santa Barbara Way, which we will continue with determination and energy”.
